Almost as good as Karajan's last version

Nearly twenty years separate this and my favourite Brahms Requiem, by the same conductor and the same choir, both with very fine orchestras and soloists.

Karajan's thrid German Requiem isn't as special as the others

Karajan felt a special affinity for the GermanRequiem, and I have cherished all four of his recordings.

I have just compared the first three studio recordings of Brahms' German Requiem by Karajan, and I'll go to the point at once - this one is clearly the least recommendable.

A good Brahms REQUIEM, but not the best

Herbert von Karajan's 1965 recording of Brahms EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM is very good indeed, but not the best in my perception.

I find it interesting that some people would go through all the trouble of listening to Karajan's recordings when they obviously do not like him as a person.

Brahms's Requiem is probably the greatest vocal work of the 19th century, and among the greatest in the history of music in general.
