A Diamond in the Rough
Never mind the naysayers who complaint about the crowd noise, and the ebullient Symphony Sid doing what he had been doing for almost 40 years at that point, announcing jazz for radio broadcasts, this CD is an incredible gem.
Important and wonderful rare recording
This is a marvelous and important recording of the finest of Bill Evans' various trios, the one with Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums.
Instead of this one, consider these. . .
I doubt there's a greater admirer of Bill Evans' ineffable, inimitable, unparalleled pianist artistry than I--which tends to make me overly resentful of recordings that misrepresent his music and, most importantly, might comprise the little recorded music a listener possesses of the most influential pianist in jazz since Bud Powell .
Evans, LaFaro, Motian: The Piano Trio
Bill Evans didn't lead the first great piano trio.
WHAT JAZZ IS REALLY ALL ABOUT!!
Folks, as a former professional bassist, who idolized the pioneers, such as Oscar Pettiford, Charles Mingus, Scotty LaFaro, to name the first three who come to mind, this is a brilliant example of what true jazz mastery is - not only of the bass, but the piano and drums = in short, the integrated trio, with ALL members interconnecting!!
Not bad once you get used to it
This album requires repeated listening.
Highly Recommended
Having read the 3 prior reviews, numerous times, I delayed purchasing the album for a couple weeks.
SO SAD
The other reviewers of this CD are far too kind but you can not rate this album highly because the talking among the audience is far too audible.
an acquired taste, a valuable piece of history
The sound quality here really does get in the way--how sad to contemplate what would have happened if the trio was properly recorded on this date!
for completists only
For our biggest pleasure, here we are with a rare recording which stayed out of sight for a long time.
